When tagging a laptop, please add also the zip code and the province/state if possible, otherwise the geolocation algorithm won't be able to compute the GPS coordinates. These are not mandatory fields, but it's a best practice to add them to help the algorithm put the laptop on the map. There is no need to include the street and home number if you want to keep that private, just the zip code and the state/province.

For instance, there are many "Irvine" cities in the US. So just saying "Irvine, US" won't allow the algorithm resolve it since it's ambiguous (this is just one example which helps to illustrate the importance of properly adding the location info): https://www.labdoo.org/content/000008986

Also, sometimes even if you add this extra info, the algorithm may not be able to compute the GPS coordinates. In that case, please use the map and zoom into it and manually click on approximately the location of the laptop to position it. See attached picture by going to this post on the Labdoo site. Thanks.

Hi Jordi

yes, that is correct. I noticed as well

  • when assigning status S4 the geo-location of the edoovillage with a correct location is enheritaged to a dootronic. Then the map will be updated with a correct position.
  • the "wrong" geo-location happens more often when you assign a status S3 or higher. Starting with status S2 the geo-location is often correct.
  • And there seems to be a dependency on the Google maps server? If they are very busy the position is wrong. Same input a few hours / days later will work well. This is just experience :)

    Thanks, Ralf

Interesting observation Ralf about the same input generating different geolocation depending on Google servers.

I will follow up with you on the S3 geolocation comment you made as that may need some improvement in the code.

So the best practice here is to include the ZIP code and the state/province to help the algorithm resolve the geolocation latitude and longitude coordinates. Then if the server cannot resolve the coordinates, the recommended action is to please manually go and update the geolocation using the mini map in the laptop's "Edit" mode page. Thks.
