Hi fellow Labdooers,

I have a few technical queries that I was hoping someone could give me advice on please.

Firstly, how long does the laptop build for the step by step method usually take? On the Labdoo Wiki, it says up to two hours to complete everything but so far it has taken way over this just to get the Lubuntu operating system to work. I had to spend a lot of time troubleshooting network card issues just to get the device working. Is this normal procedure and would anyone advise to use the fast restoration method instead?

Please can someone also clarify where exactly to download the post Lubuntu packages to be installed as some of the Labdoo wiki links do not work.

Do you guys use any tools to sanitise the disk drive before installing Lubuntu? I've already had queries from companies due to fear of company data remaining intact on disk after redeployment.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kiran,
it is quite a while that Labdoo (Germany) did the step-by-step installation. Next time will be 2nd quarter 2020, when we'll set-up the 20.04 LTS based images for cloning.
But as far as I remember it takes about 3 - 12 hours, depending what you include in the installation. Just the basic Lubuntu and some LibreOffice? Or the Edubuntu packages as well? And the educational wikis and content? And the special settings to optimize a laptop? Drivers? And so on.
Where as cloning takes about 1/2 to one hour (plus downloading the image you need). I personally are using only Labtix tool and cloning.
I am not updating the English wiki pages, but please add the broken links here or send them to contact@Labdoo.org to be fixed.
Yes, we use shred or DBAN or any Linux based tool to remove. If you use our Labtix installation tool data removal is already included.
The way of shredding 3-times the disk is safe. In Germany we have two options to support company needs. Our Labdoo association can confirm by a letter the procedure of deleting and more. And for companies needing compliance conform data removal we have TÜV/Dekra certified partners. They offer a service for large enterprises.
Hope I could answer some of your questions.

Hi Ralf,

Thanks for answering my queries, I really appreciate the help.

Based on your advice, I'll switch to the Labtix method, is this the resource that I should be following?

Also, is it possible for you to share the template for the letter and certificate for me to use for our NZ laptop donors? If not, please advise otherwise.

Thanks,
Kiran

Hi Kiran,
the link is correct.
Sorry, due to missing time I am only managing Labdoo.org (Germany), the German association Labdoo.org e.V. and German wikis and documents. I only answered here to give you a fast reply. For English documents please check-out the English wikis or send a mail to contact@Labdoo.org to get information, which documents are available in English.
