We would like to share with you a great idea. This time it comes from Janice, who manages the Labdoo Hub in Auckland, New Zealand. Janice reached out to the Qantas Airline because she realized that often times people forget their tablets in the airplanes. It turns out airlines tend to have many tablets in their lost&found department which are never reclaimed. Janice proposed Qantas a collaboration so they could donate the unsolicited tablets to Labdoo, and they accepted it. Just a few days ago, Janice received a donation of 57 tablets via this channel. The airline also confirmed that every six months they would send their unsolicited tablets to Janice's hub in New Zealand.

We thought this is worth sharing to all hub managers because many of you may have relations or friends who work in airlines, so you could replicate Janice's model.

Through this collaboration Qantas is joining our Labdoo Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, and Janice has prepared some very nice Certificates of Appreciation (CoA) that we are putting in Google's Drive so others can reuse too. If you need to send CoAs to others who are helping your hub operation, feel free to use this template.

Thank you.

Interesting idea although how does Janice circumvent the security on these tablets to utilize them again? I know that both iPad and and newer devices when locked without the correct login details are useless to anyone else.

I did not sanitize them but took them to Australia. Maria Hicks, of Melbourne Labdoo, had a friend wipe the last batch and they did not appear to have issues. If no-one knows how to get around this, I could reach out to her to get details for future sanitization workshops. Three did come up with security messages with the owner's contact details. We contacted the owners and returned one with the remaining two being donated to Labdoo once they heard about what we do.

The approach typically relies on enforcing a factory reset. So without password you cannot recover the data, but you can reset the hardware eliminating any personal data, which is what we want.

For iPad: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306

Since solutions depend on the brand and model, part of this pilot project is to document the techniques that work and describe them in our Labdoo Wiki so we can share the knowledge on how to recover tablet devices while eliminating all personal data. There will be a sanitation event in New York in June where some of Janice's tablets will be sanitized and out of that event we will post documentation on the learning lessons.
