In April, 2018 the new Long Term Support version of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be released. It will take a few weeks/months, before there will be stable, bug-fixed versions, before Labdoo has implemented a new image for cloning, updated manuals, wikis and video tutorials. But then this release again will be our technological platform up to 2020.

Please add here your comments, wishes concerning 18.04 LTS and we'll check and take them into account, if possible and helpful.

Operating System OS (L)Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

  • Drop support for nonPAE CPUs; will cut of laptops older than 2003/2004 from Labdoo project, but with 18.04 LTS Dual Core CPU might become the minimum requirement anyway
  • Stay with Lubuntu (OS), LXDE and MATE (desktops)
  • add SAMBA server and needed add-ons to make every Labdoo computer a server
  • ...?

Installation

  • Stop using Alternate installation CD for (L)Ubuntu; remove it from manuals, wikis etc.
  • ...?

Content

  • as each laptop can become a server it is possible now to add any device (mobile phone, tablet etc.) as client to read content on a laptop (add how-to as well to wiki)
  • ...?

Documentation, wikis, video tutorials

  • ...?

To be continued...

Thanks for the input and yes, in Switzerland we still receive plenty of laptops with a single core and with low specifications. With our PXE installation process we can keep as many clones as we want, e.g. we will stick for a while with the 14.04LTS version and will also continue to use the 16.04LTS. For modern laptops we definitely will go the 18.04LTS route.
