The images for cloning, dated July 4th or younger, will come with an updated list of available software in repositories and an updated MATE Software Boutique. The uploads are running during this week...

The good news is that Skype for Linux (Beta) is now available, but only in a 64 Bit CPU release https://blogs.skype.com/news/2017/03/01/the-skype-for-linux-beta-version.... It can be installed easily using the MATE software boutique (System -> Administration -> Software Boutique | search for "Skype" and it will show you "linuxforskype", install it). Please note that the package name has changed from "skype" to "skypeforlinux".

The bad news is that there are neither the former "skype" packages available (32 and 64 Bit versions were dropped from the (L)Ubuntu packages list) nor a 32 Bit version of skypeforlinux. So there is no skype available for 32 Bit. It seems the trend to drop 32 Bit versions is continuing and the Linux community is concentrating their work on 64 bit versions. This is sad for Labdoo, as many of the donated laptops have a 32 Bit CPU -and a camera. So let's hope that a 32 Bit (L)Ubuntu operating system will still be available for a long time, but the list of 32 bit programs might become shorter...

Schools might use alternative solutions? http://xmodulo.com/alternatives-skype-linux.html

Or there might be a (complex) way of installing skype manually from web, but that is risky. You should stay with the standard repositories (like an app store, software list).

Skype for Linux (Beta) is not pre-installed in the images, but you can add at least the 64 Bit-version easily using MATE Software Boutique.

Thanks,
