03/29/2012 - Labdoo QA Global Party 8
Thanks everyone for joining yesterday's QGP! we had a great event with people participating from Mexico, California, Germany and Barcelona! and we got to sanitize a good number of laptops in the process!
QGP events are hosted via chat, so we can log all the conversations for future reference. So even if you were not able to join this QGP, you can still learn how to sanitize your laptop from the hands-on conversations we had in the event. Next, is the full transcript of the QGP event hosted on 03/29/2012.
Happy QAing.

[09:44] <Angel_P_Mex> jaja muy bien, hoy es un día soleado, perfecto para salir a pasear
[09:45] <Angel_P_Mex> people quick question, we're tagging two laptops which have a couple of issues, like number 3 in the keyboard missing, or the power cable from the ac adapter to the wall
[09:45] <Muelheim-Hub> vale, hoy estuve muy frio, solamente 10 °C. Ayer 22°C
[09:46] <wendy> :) i am trying to learn Spanish
[09:46] <wendy> but a very slow learner :(
[09:46] <Muelheim-Hub> never mind
[09:46] <Angel_P_Mex> is there a way to tell the rest of the hubs something like "in case you can help finding this stuff send it", like open tickets for help

[09:48] <Angel_P_Mex> hahaha
[09:49] <wendy> I personally think it's ok for one number key is missing ... but is the number "3" still functiional?
[09:49] <wendy> and we can always find adapters from our broken machines
[09:50] <wendy> (most of the time)
[09:51] <wendy> as long as you let the rest of the group know the laptop model and may be our other hubs can provide matched one for you

[09:51] <wendy> i like the idea of dootrip laptop components to Mexico City :)
[09:52] <jordi_barcelona> didn't realize the computer got disconnected...
[09:52] <wendy> :)lol:)
[09:53] <Angel_P_Mex> ok, yes the key is functional, now in the "internal communication" how do we let know the rest of the hubs know we have that issue, just in the tagging process? thru the team box?
[09:54] <jordi_barcelona> we got like 15 laptops and we are just 3, so a bit overbooking today :)
[09:54] <Angel_P_Mex> obviously we are putting efforts to solve it locally
[09:55] <jordi_barcelona> sorry i missed part of the chat... what is the issue been asked?
[09:56] <wendy> how we communicate as hubs about missing parts exchange?
[09:57] <Angel_P_Mex> hey Jordi, I posted the question like this: is there a way to tell the rest of the hubs something like "in case you can help finding this stuff send it", like open tickets for help
[09:57] <wendy> maybe forum is a better place for now
[09:58] <wendy> jordi, can we create a forum category for this
[09:58] <wendy> so we can all subscibe to get notify if other hubs need a part?
[09:58] <jordi_barcelona> right, good question... the only way right now is via the simple forum labdoo has... but we are working to integrate teambox into labdoo... not sure if you guys are familiar with teambox
[09:59] <jordi_barcelona> teambox has the functionality of adding tickets, etc.
[09:59] <Angel_P_Mex> ok, let me check
[10:00] <jordi_barcelona> we will hopefully have teambox integration some time this year, in the meantime, we would need to use the forum and email... or you can use the separate teambox interface
[10:00] <wendy> one small problem with current teambox is the tickets doesn't get populated to many
[10:00] <Angel_P_Mex> nice
[10:01] <wendy> and easy to get neglected by careless people like me :(
[10:02] <wendy> you think forum is a better place for now before the teambox is ready?
[10:02] <Muelheim-Hub> so more people see the more you have a chance to get the missing parts
[10:02] <wendy> exactly :)
[10:03] <wendy> thanks Ralf :)

[10:03] <Muelheim-Hub> Hi Simon
[10:03] <simonberlin> hello everyone :)
[10:03] <simonberlin> hi ralf!
[10:05] <simonberlin> wow, it's really quiet in here... have i missed everything yet?
[10:05] <Muelheim-Hub> We try to establish a community on www.xing.com (similar to linked in, but for German business guys). We have the same problem in Germany. Not everybody has a login to Labdoo.org, but wants to contribute.
[10:06] <wendy> that's actually another question i'd like to ask Jordi
[10:06] <wendy> if it's possible for us to add a new hidden filed with the laptop donor's email address on the "add laptop" form?
[10:07] <wendy> so we keep their privacy, on the other hand, they get notifiy when his/her laptop get some progress
[10:08] <wendy> this will really encourage those who do want to get a labdoo user account of themselves later
[10:08] <wendy> what do you think?
[10:09] <wendy> is this something you are trying to ask, Ralf?
[10:09] <jordi_barcelona> you mean adding the email address without the need to register to labdoo right?
[10:09] <wendy> yes
[10:09] <wendy> :)
[10:09] <wendy> and keep it private
[10:10] <Muelheim-Hub> Yes, a lot of people want to contribute, but the language is a problem or the login
[10:10] <wendy> :( very same problem in Taiwan
[10:11] <simonberlin> what about the possibility to write an email to the the hub contact?
[10:11] <wendy> so I was just thinking manually sending Chinese emails before coming up a better solution
[10:12] <wendy> and i'd like to brainstorm hwo to automate the process ...
[10:12] <Muelheim-Hub> I inform also the donator by mail, when ready to be shipped and another one when assigned to a project and on its way
[10:13] <Muelheim-Hub> automation would be a help
[10:13] == jordi_barcelona [9353b60c@gateway/web/freenode/ip.147.83.182.12] has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[10:13] <wendy> my scheme now is take the excel from the Labdoo inventory with intial "S1" in Taiwan once a month, and match it with the private email list
[10:15] <Muelheim-Hub> similar, I am using an Excel sheet with all laptops and donators and when S3 or S4 changes I send a mail
[10:15] <wendy> sort and check for new S4, auto fill the laptop id portion, and use linux sendmail with my very prilimary scripting skill:)
[10:15] <Muelheim-Hub> :-( am not able to script...
[10:16] <Angel_P_Mex> here in Mexico we are thinkiing about the samething, one thing that we think is a must is to keep up with the translation of the web page, but on the other hand about the donators we also should give feedback about their donation just as you guys and girl are saying, because not everybody will have the patience or the will to enter the whole process (tagging, clean up, sanitize)
[10:16] <wendy> on a Chinese email thank you letter template
[10:18] <Angel_P_Mex> I need to write this down Wendy, good info

[10:24] <wendy> SHould i create a teambox ticke for this?
[10:25] <jordi_barcelona> yes please, go ahead with the ticket
[10:25] <jordi_barcelona> right now the notification email is in English, that needs to be localized too
[10:27] <Angel_> Hey, I have problems with the ubuntu installation in one of the laptops.
[10:28] <Angel_> The laptop did read the disc
[10:28] <Angel_> the screen shows the ubuntu logo with a loading bar
[10:28] <Angel_> but it doesn't do anything else
[10:29] <Angel_> it has been like this for about ten minutes
[10:29] <Angel_> anyone has had the same problem before?
[10:29] <jordi_barcelona> is it the first ubuntu black screen?
[10:30] <Angel_> yes (purple) screen
[10:30] <jordi_barcelona> strange...
[10:31] <Angel_> yep, it doesn't move from this point
[10:31] <jordi_barcelona> can the laptop boot into windows?
[10:31] <Angel_> yes
[10:31] <Angel_> it works fine in windows
[10:31] <wendy> what's the laptop's configuratiion?
[10:31] <wendy> memory and HD?
[10:31] <wendy> and CPU?
[10:32] <simonberlin> have you tried booting from another bootable disc?
[10:33] <Angel_> Don't know the specs and haven't tried booting from another disc (would be usb I think). I'll reboot with windows to know the specs.
[10:33] <Angel_> Now a message appeared:
[10:33] <Angel_> "waiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration..."
[10:34] <Angel_> new message:
[10:34] <Angel_> "booting system without full network configutration"
[10:34] <Angel_> maybbe it's just that the laptop is veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow
[10:35] <wendy> :D
[10:35] <jordi_barcelona> keep the faith :)
[10:36] <Angel_> you bet!
[10:36] <Angel_> the other laptop is behaving fine
[10:39] <jordi_barcelona> ok, if it does not boot, maybe check the bios?
[10:39] <Angel_> what part of the bios should I check?
[10:42] <jordi_barcelona> it seemed that it was trying to boot from the network, not sure... but it also seems that the bios was alright cause you got the ubuntu screen...
[10:42] <jordi_barcelona> oh, check if the drive is a CD or DVD drive
[10:42] <Angel_> dvd drive
[10:42] <jordi_barcelona> if it is a CD drive, don't use DVD
[10:42] <jordi_barcelona> ok
[10:43] <Angel_> we are thinking that maybe it's a RAM problem, because ubuntu 11.04 requests 500 Mb and I don't think this old laptop has more than 256
[10:43] <wendy> :) i still think it maybe because the machine is not powerful enough ... which ubuntu version you are using< ANgel?
[10:43] <Angel_> I have a 10.04 cd, gonna try this that one
[10:44] <Angel_> with*
[10:44] <wendy> and jordi you mentioned about the stripped down version on the other QGP meeting?
[10:44] <wendy> (sorry ... I am not a good student :(
[10:45] <wendy> maybe Angel can try the method if his machine is not powerful enough?
[10:45] <jordi_barcelona> right, how about you try with Ubuntu Alternate CD?
[10:46] <jordi_barcelona> it can be downloaded from here
[10:46] <jordi_barcelona> it is a text mode installation version
[10:46] <jordi_barcelona> the end result is the same
[10:46] <simonberlin> wow, there still is an alternate cd?
[10:46] <simonberlin> im glad to hear that
[10:47] <jordi_barcelona> it's this one "PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD"
[10:47] <Angel_> ok, I'll try that!, thanks!
[10:51] <Muelheim-Hub> @Simon: There is a Eduntu-DVD too http://www.edubuntu.org/download. You need a DVD, so not usable for all laptops. But faster than downloading packages afterwards. Also bootable from USB-stick.
[10:52] <Muelheim-Hub> Especially if you have 1 Mbit-DSL in the Black Forest and 5 laptops downloading at the same time.....
[10:53] <wendy> :):):)
[10:54] <jordi_barcelona> Guys, we have to take off here in Barcelona... unfortunately... the reason is that today there is a national strike, and some of the transportation system will be shutdown... so the team here has to get home earlier...
[10:54] <Angel_> ok, thanks Jordi
[10:55] <Muelheim-Hub> @Wendy and Jordi: translation (some minutes ago...) can be contributed, but it is a permanent process. Still not all web pages are translated and others I would like to correct or change text. I know I asked already several times. But PLEASE think about allowing access to labdoo.org/de (text only, no html programming)
[10:55] <Muelheim-Hub> ok, good bye, Jordi. We can discuss it later
[10:55] <Angel_P_Mex> ok thanks huys
[10:55] <jordi_barcelona> But you guys can continue... it's been awesome to be connected with all of you at the same time... today we've had people from Mexico, California, Germany and Barcelona

[10:56] <Angel_P_Mex> yeap will remain here

[11:01] <wendy> we copy the pages into document format and have the volunteers in different language do the translation in word
[11:01] <Angel_> excellent!
[11:01] <wendy> and jordi or me can help post them
[11:01] <wendy> since there's problem grant access right just for the translation portion for the website
[11:02] <Angel_> I'll talk with Jordi about this because there is a lot of people that doesn't speak english back here in Mexico and that is a problem regarding the website
[11:02] <wendy> sorry for the inconvenience
[11:02] <Angel_> ok, understood
[11:10] <Angel_P_Mex> I think that is ok, just translations doesn't require access as admin, now the other thing that we are realizing is that the web page is not that "user friendly"
[11:11] <wendy> ? "user friendly" ?
[11:11] <wendy> :)
[11:11] <wendy> can you elaborate more?
[11:15] <Angel_P_Mex> for instance, if I change the language still a lot of the web page displays info in english and regular pc users, say for instance my Mom, get lost, between language barrier and the communication structure of the web page
[11:16] <simonberlin> i agree... the design of the website could use some improvement
[11:17] <simonberlin> i myself find critical for a good website that you easily find what you are looking for
[11:17] <wendy> :) lol:)
[11:17] <simonberlin> on the labdoo page however there is just LOTS of stuff
[11:17] <wendy> :) more smileys :)
[11:18] <Angel_> i think it's just a matter of arranging the content
[11:18] <simonberlin> when i started to work for labdoo and were trying to get to know the project i (literally) had to click on every button to see what it does
[11:18] <simonberlin> the menu on the left is okay
[11:18] <Angel_> I'm still in that stage :D
[11:18] <wendy> Many actually reflected similar concern
[11:19] <wendy> just ... I think the web design team need a more clear suggestion on "howto"
[11:19] <simonberlin> the menu on top is my main point (it could be great but it is 100% confusing and partly redundant)... and there is stuff on the right too (the stats) which are pretty useful but also distracting
[11:19] <simonberlin> hmmm
[11:19] <simonberlin> maybe we could do a "design" contest or something
[11:19] <wendy> :) very good
[11:19] <Angel_P_Mex> exactly, lots of info but not easy to identify, 1) what we propose 2) what we want you to do 3) now do this , I would express this like "lets get the web page in terms of "labdoo and digital divide for dummies", not trying to offend anyone
[11:19] <wendy> we should have a forum on this
[11:20] <simonberlin> yes... i am also thinking about something else
[11:20] <wendy> and maybe people can attach their idea in "sketch"
[11:20] <wendy> so easier to get the idea cross?
[11:20] <wendy> what do you think?
[11:21] <simonberlin> i think it would be a good idea if people could make suggestions independet from one another
[11:21] <Angel_> the forum seems like a good idea
[11:21] <simonberlin> also it might be useful if someone would "analyze" the page first
[11:21] <wendy> we all are aware it's busy, but not professiional enough to pin point and tell how to make it better
[11:22] <simonberlin> so everyone has a place where he could start (i mean something like a website-tree... try to list the functions in an hierarchical fashion)
[11:22] <simonberlin> also i could try something else first
[11:22] <simonberlin> i study psychology and therefore i have s few friends who specialize in this kind of thing ("usability")
[11:22] <simonberlin> maybe they can do me a favor
[11:23] <Angel_> great!
[11:23] <wendy> :):):)
[11:23] <simonberlin> well... "maybe"... i will ask them... semester is starting soon
[11:23] <Angel_P_Mex> yeap...it's important that we are aware that the page has indeed a lot of content, so we are not starting from zero
[11:24] <wendy> the web design team has put lots of effort on it
[11:24] <wendy> too bad i don't have the coding skill to help
[11:24] <wendy> :(
[11:24] <Angel_P_Mex> the usual management thing : what do we have?, what are we missing? where do we go from here?
[11:24] <simonberlin> yes, i would like those too, wendy :D
[11:25] <Angel_> We could arrange a chat room with the web design team and let them know what we think
[11:26] <simonberlin> thats a good idea
[11:26] <Angel_> do you have contact with them Wendy?
[11:26] <wendy> "chat room" may not be practical since it's not easy to get the whole team (the one who has ideas about implementation and the one who really do the work)
[11:27] <Angel_> ok
[11:27] <wendy> maybe forum is a good place to start??
[11:27] <Angel_> agree
[11:27] <wendy> and i actually remember seeing similar conversation in forum ... maybe from Ralf or Kevin, the UCI team
[11:28] <wendy> I will try to find which forum and forward you guys and maybe we continue the discussion from there?
[11:28] <wendy> so everyone is in the loop?
[11:28] <Angel_P_Mex> that would be just great
[11:28] <simonberlin> yep... sounds good for me
[11:28] <Angel_P_Mex> thnx
[11:29] <wendy> ok ... 2 action items for me - forum for parts needed and web implementaion
[11:31] <wendy> and done w/ ticket submission on the donor email notification
[11:31] <wendy> once you obtain a teambox account, you may track the progress on this ticket
[11:33] <simonberlin> great! does signing in with an existing account (e.g. google) relly work?
[11:33] <Angel_> good! thanks wendy!
[11:35] <wendy> Are you talking about Teambox, Simon?
[11:35] <simonberlin> yes
[11:35] <simonberlin> it was saying that on the login page
[11:37] <wendy> sorry ...can you give it a try and let me know? i got my teambox account at very early stage so not sure about if it works
[11:40] <simonberlin> hm... it SEEMS to work... but since teambox is demanding access to my mails, contacts, calendars and documents i am not going to do it... so i'll just register the regular way
[11:40] <simonberlin> no wonder they ask fpr facebook, twitter or google... cheap bastards :D
[11:41] <wendy> :) haha
[11:42] <wendy> that's the part of all these social media always get me irritated
[11:43] <wendy> not too politely taking your information away
[11:44] <wendy> they offer their services "for free" ;P
[11:46] <simonberlin> well at least they asked :D
[11:48] <Angel_> I'm still in th login process :)
[11:50] <Angel_> I'm not suscribed to the labdoo project in teambos. What should I do?
[11:51] <Angel_> done! :)
[11:53] <wendy> done with subscriptiion?
[11:53] <wendy> If not, it's under the Settings
[11:56] <wendy> and for the parts request
[11:57] <Angel_P_Mex> we'll do that
[12:14] <simonberlin> okay, i will go offline now... it was nice to meet you all!
[12:14] <simonberlin> see you soon ;)
[12:15] <wendy> nice meeting you
[12:15] <wendy> i think it's good time to wrap up
[12:15] <wendy> Angel(s)?
[12:16] <simonberlin> bye bye :)
[12:16] == simonberlin [5b41b1b2@gateway/web/freenode/ip.91.65.177.178] has quit [Quit: Page closed]
[12:17] <Angel_P_Mex> yeap
